In recent days, our Fruit Observer reporter learnt that at the Jiangnan fruit market currently the best seller fruit is Arus melon, which is a new variety of melon that just comes into the market. The Arus melon is a cross between Japanese Cucumis melon and Masku melon originated from the Middle East and the Africa. The Arus melon used to be only bred in some regions of Japan and the price was quite high. But after it was introduced and successfully bred in Guangdong province last year, the wholesale price was dropped to RMB 3.2 yuan per 500g so most consumers can easily afford it now.

Other than the Arus melon, Hainan Hami melon No. 25 gains popularity too in the market because of its thin skin, thick and juicy flesh. A considerable quantity was sold every day and the supply can be sustained until next February. The wholesale price is around RMB 2 yuan per 500g.

Among all the exported fruits, the price of Chilean cherry by air has dropped sharply below the normal price range. Since the ocean shipment cherry is about to arrive, to avoid further losses, a portion of cherry shipped by air is offered at a fire sale price, only RMB 450 yuan per 5kg. The Jiangnan fruit market says that the Chilean cherry has never been sold at such a low price. However, the decreasing price did not lead to an increasing sales compared to the last year.
